In Hong Kong poverty is a serious problem. According to HKCSS statistics for the first quarter of 2011, amidst great affluence, 17.8% of the population struggle to make ends meet. Images of the social and personal impact of poverty are everywhere.
Photo Contest HK as part of the WYNG Photography Project intends to stimulate discussion and encourage social responsibility on important issues in Hong Kong through PHOTOGRAPHY – the theme for the first phase of PHOTO CONTEST HK will be Poverty in the Midst of Plenty.
To enter the contest, participants can visit: www.photocontest.hk and register with one’s Facebook account. Each participant can upload a maximum of 10 photos. The organizers of the Contest would pick out the finalists and the winners will be arrived at through public vote. The winner, first runner-up and second runner-up would receive HK$20,000, HK$10,000 and HK$5,000.
The WYNG Photography Project, supported by the WYNG Foundation www.wyng.hk , seeks to create a significant photography prize AND provoke discussion. Many photography prizes around the world begin and end with the photography competition and a prize. The WYNG Photography Project community engagement starts with the award winning images.
Photo Contest HK intends to set up a photo library, where the images are granted Creative Commons licenses, so photographs can be used for lectures and promotion of non- commercial nature with appropriate attribution, as well as being a photographic history of Hong Kong.
